Abstract An excellent user experience is key for almost every successful web project: only delighted users are also likely to become happy and loyal customers. To design and optimize the best user interface means to focus on the user's needs and expectations in a very systematic and consistent way. 

We will discuss underlying user experience principles and best practices in real web applications.

Simon Raess is User Experience Designer at Google in Zurich and New York. The projects he is most involved with are Google Apps and Google Visualizations, as well as several initiatives in web search.
Simon has been educated in Media Psychology and Neuropsychology at the University of Bern, where he also worked as a lecturer and scientific assistant. He was involved in writing a text book on Media Psychology and in building-up the online Journal of Eye Movement Research.
Simon is the founder and owner of Cmsbox Ltd. and was the Lead Application Designer and Product Manager of the eponymous Content Management System. The product has been awarded with the "Master of Swiss Web" and was one of the "NNGroup 10 Best Application Designs" in 2008. Before he started the company, he worked as a Usability Engineer at Swisscom Innovations.
